50 Reasons to Run

In honor of World Hospice Day and to raise awareness of Living Room’s Kimbilio Hospice, on October 4, we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Kimbilio Hospice Run, which will begin and end on the Living Room grounds. The word “Kimbilio” in Kiswahili means “refuge” or more literally, “a place to run to.” With this in mind, the theme of this run is “A Place to Run to… Worth Running for.” The stories presented are of Living Room guests who have helped to shape the hospice, and we believe they are worth running for. We encourage you to read and share these stories.

HONORING KATHY

Kathy Martin had the opportunity to visit the Living Room in June 2012.  She instantly fell in love with the mission of caring for others in their greatest time of need, at their sickest moment….

Joy and pain

There is joy. And there is pain. We must find the courage to live in both, because God is in both.

Genevieve

I recently sat with Genevieve, a 17 year old girl living with HIV/AIDS. At first glance, it is difficult to see anything other than disease. Her body has wasted away to little more than a skeletal frame. For as long as she remembers, Genevieve has been sick. Her childhood was … read more

An Unlikely Friendship

This photograph tells the story of an unlikely but beautiful friendship that has developed between two of Living Room’s guests—Nicholas and Chepchumba. Most days this pair can be found sitting—side-by-side—on the porch.

World Cancer Day

Today is World Cancer Day, a day set aside for people from all over the world to unite and to say once more: We must fight cancer. The latest statistics, released from the World Health Organization, are, at best, troubling. As a single entity, cancer is the biggest cause of mortality worldwide—there were an estimated 8.2 million deaths from cancer in 2012

There is joy today.

Last Friday, our beloved guest Jacob returned to Kimbilio Hospice after spending time at home with his family to celebrate Christmas. It was the same day I had come back to Living Room after a fruitful trip to the States; and what a joy it was to be reunited with this friend. As the ambulance pulled into the driveway, our staff gathered to sing and celebrate the arrival of Jacob. It was an extravagant welcome—a beautiful picture of a community graced with the gift of hospitality.

CA Team-More Final Thoughts

As with any life-altering experience, there are always the weeks and the months after.  For our team it is the weeks after Kenya and Living Room that are significant.  We returned to our jobs, to our church and to our neighborhoods.  It can be hard to think about how quickly we readjust to the rhythm of the normal.  In a few more weeks, friends will have seen all the photos on Facebook and co-workers will stop asking about our time there.  Life will move on.
