A Mother’s Love

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?” These words from the book of Isaiah flooded my thoughts as I watched a young, gravely ill mother arrive to Kimbilio Hospice. Her body was wasted from disease, but she also explained that she had not been able to eat, from lack of food, for nearly two days. As we examined the mother, she attempted to offer her breast to her six month old little girl, a child who weighed a mere five pounds. It was an image of compassion and sacrifice that will not soon leave my mind. There was desperateness in the mother’s face and in the tone of her voice. It was clear that she loved her child; and due to a myriad of tragic circumstances, she needed urgent help. A refuge was necessary for both the mother and baby to have a chance to survive.
